Library trip. Shall we catch up?

1. Since it was a very cloudy morning, I brought the umbrella. I doubted that I was going to need it, and I didn't need it, though the clouds never did burn off. The sun is only starting to show now.

2. I struggled a little over which Dickens novel to tackle. Too many choices. I thought I was going to go with "Hard Times", but that was published under pressure and it's thinner, and one gets the impressions from the reviews and discussion that it is more didactic, and since I am just getting back into Dickens, I wanted to go with a surer thing in terms of reading pleasure. I checked out "Our Mutual Friend".

3. Top-flight dish of chicken fried rice, though it has been great all season. The restaurant seems to be picking up business. There were a good half-dozen parties partaking while I was there. I keep thinking how nice it would be if I could eat there a couple of times a week, if I lived downtown and had such means.

4. Crowded bus ride home. On the last leg, it already smelled bad when I boarded the bus, and then an older man crowded next to me. Garrulous. Unwelcomed. And he apologized for his scent, saying that he had rolled in dog shit, or something like that. A poor mex and not particularly well-spoken. I tried to hide in my book, but he insisted on talking about even that. He says he can't understand poetry unless it is very simple. I would nod and mumble something responsive, but did not refrain from venting a little chill.

Now to catch up with my blogging and my daily routine.

Twenty pages into "Our Mutual Friend" and I'm finding it uncompelling and pretty rough-going. If it were not Charles Dickens, I am sure I would have given up on the novel already. I am sticking with it for now, but we will have to see how I am feeling about it at around the hundred-page mark.

Neighbor Dog really likes cheese anyway. Which is good. We always have that.
