I should be used to it, but it still feels like a spit in the face when I open my e-mail in the morning and have no messages, even though this hasn't been fun in years.

Strange. Sammy knows I am in the big room, but he often goes to my bedroom door to give a little meowing wail. Not just this morning. It's a regular habit. Is it feline or is it just Sammy?

Maureen Dowd gives us a delicious Elvis story. Well, it's only indirectly about Elvis, but that glow goes far. Let's just say that I think we know where they got the idea for the movie "Change of Habit", in which Mary Tyler Moore chooses to stay married to God rather than do the wild thing with Elvis.

his country and western noise

Pop blares his country and western noise to new heights. I was surprised to see that his office door is shut and doens't need shutting. When I also close the door to the big room, the noise is largely muted. Largely. But I cannot help thinking dispiritedly, "This is my life."

Miley got her 12th tattoo yesterday, which apparently says, "Love never dies."

She looks like a little kid in the pic, like this one goes way back, but it must be a fluke of angle and lighting. Very cute. And rather well-toned. She must work out. I don't think I'd care to arm-wrestle with her. Though, the injury to my pride might be worth holding hands with her for a while.

Garry Wills on the Contraception Debate

What good timing! We have recently taken up Garry Wills's book on Jesus, and now we have a brief and stunning takedown of the Republican and Catholic position against contraception. He makes it look so easy to stand up against the officious bullying of the bishops and our Christ-baiting politicos, and on their own sectarian grounds, being a devout Catholic himself.
