A good, deficit-recovering sleep. But it was not without its drama. Another of those middle of the night bouts of diarrhea. Something I ate? I only had Pop Tarts for dinner! (A big, late lunch of barbecue baked chicken.) Well, I did have a quick sausage & tortilla sandwich. I have thought that evening sausage somehow renders me vulnerable, and this confirms it, but I don't get why this should be, and I am still inclined to regard this as an unfortunate coincidence.

But I called it! When I finished cleaning my toilet late last night, I thought to myself, "Well, now it's time for a bad shit!" And I was right. It almost never fails.

Ross Douthat has a nice column on how Washington D.C. keeps getting richer while the rest of America is getting poorer. Although this is a familiar refrain in conservative critiques, he notes that Romney and today's leading Republicans don't really care to pick up the gauntlet, focusing their angst and contempt more on the poor than the real wards of big government.

For some of us, there eventually comes the point when we realize that our interests and our happiness are not the issue, but are mere irrelevancies in the much larger world around us, and that the best thing we can do is just to look around and take in all that life that is swirling around us and try to ignore the pain within.
