a long week with the cats
Oct. 2nd, 2012 09:36 amIt's going to be a long week with the cats penned up in the house. It stormed hard in the early evening yesterday and the lawn is flooded and is now part lake. I'm thinking we will be lucky if the cats can go out next weekend.
I tried a new strategy last night. Since I was already dead tired by eleven, and the cats are usually quiet during the first part of the night, I decided to go straight to bed instead of forcing myself to get in a couple of chapters on my page-turner. This worked very well. I fell asleep right away, and I did not wake up until about one-thirty to the serenading of Coco's cries. At that point, I knew I wasn't just going to fall back asleep; so, I got out of bed, picked up the Kindle, and moved to the big room. Pop, incidentally, was in the office. I read for an hour and a half, and I decided to try to sleep in the big room, but that's when things went awry, because sleep wasn't happening. I may have dozed a little, but at about four, I decided to go to my own bed and leave the cats in the big room with the window open. I slept nicely and I suppose the cats were actually quiet. In the end, I still felt a little beat up in the morning.
I think I will stick to this basic outline and see how it plays out in the coming nights. It is not perfect, but it's the best I got. And, besides, it's not just the cats. I just haven't been able to count on sleep lately, and I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's not disastrous; I'm not in zombie mode all day and every day. But it takes a good ten-percent off my game. I feel weakened and a little brittle.
