Dec. 21st, 2012 08:00 am“The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments and musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature by the hand of the divinity itself and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.”
-- Alexaner Hamilton (quoted by Ron Chernow)

In other words, Hamilton and his fellow compatriots did not believe that they should be bound by old contracts with the King of England.
