Darwin Porter gives us this conversation between Marilyn and fellow sexpot actress Jeanne Carmen. They are talking about Marilyn’s affair with Jack Kennedy. I doubt any serious voice would credit this as being a genuine historical fact, but it is fun and packs a great punchline.

Marilyn said, “Well, there is the remote chance he might become president, and I might sign on as First Mistress, or even First Lady if he divorces that uptight wife of his. I might even enter the history books like my hero, Abraham Lincoln.”

“Now, Marilyn,” Carmen cautioned. “That’s aiming a bit high.”

“Jeanne, the trouble with you is that you don’t aim high enough. All you care about is seducing another movie star and adding another notch to your garter belt. So you fucked Jack Benny and Errol Flynn. I like to pursue bigger game... like presidents. Going to bed with Jerry Lewis is no big deal anyway you look at it.”

Another little drama today. Let's hope it's a little one. Pop let a fast-talking hustler on the phone convince him to allow someone to check our attic insulation. I suppose Pop gets hooked on the fact that it's free and he is not committing to anything and it cannot hurt "to hear what he has to say", as if one can trust anything that will come out of this guy's mouth. One can only hope that this guy is not too deeply dishonest and is getting a look inside the house in preparation to burglarize it. And let's also hope that Pop can say 'no' when it comes to any actual work being done. In all fairness to Pop, another hook was probably the fact that he feels terribly cold in this wintry weather, so that he feels that there is a real problem that needs to be addressed.

Using my 'Bo' icon, it occurs to me that this was another good thing that I got from that dandelion summer of 2005. But for Gabe, I never would have gotten a webcam, and so I never would have been able to take a picture and have it available as a jpg-image to use online. And I really do love looking into that little 100x100 pixel-window into the past and see my best friend. He even has his the tip of his little pink tongue out. It's funny how it feels like another lifetime ago.

Oh, we have a hot little story that LiLo is working it as an escort. One cannot be sure how true it is, but it is too hot to just turn away from and ignore. And even the story keeps its distance from the claim that this includes some serious sack time on her back, but when you are really hungry for the money...

Whoa, the French have led a military invasion agaist Islamist rebels in Mali. The French used to be the country's colonial rulers, and I guess they still feel some responsibility for the government. The rebels have taken over some cities and threatened to overrun the south. The French also argue that they do not care to see a major terrorist base set up this close to Europe and France.

“You can’t launch a war of extermination against a very tenacious and mobile adversary. We are in a classic counterinsurrectionary situation. They are well armed, but the weapons are not sophisticated. A couple of thousand men, very mobile.”

-- Col. Michel Goya of the French Military Academy’s Strategic Research Institute

This could be a drawn-out affair. One thinks of America's takeover of Iraq. The number of rebels sounds rather small, but one suspects that the Islamists may count on support from their fellow jihadists.

As old debating friends know, I have tended to be pretty strongly pro-Israel, but these expansionist, anti-democratic leanings that we are seeing lately is news that has even me blinking. I always felt that the key was that the Israelis were at least clearly better situated morally than their Muslim enemies, but it does not help the cause if they are only going to become more like their enemies and turn into just another kind of fundamentalist militant.

Israeli politics continues its seemingly endless trek to the right. Every day, the Web carries the voice of another leader of the settler movement who insists that the settlers are the vanguard now, that the old verities are to be challenged, if not eliminated. Early last year, Benny Katzover, a leader in the settlement of Elon Moreh, told a Chabad paper, Beit Mashiach, “I would say that today Israeli democracy has one central mission, and that is to disappear. Israeli democracy has finished its historical role, and it must be dismantled and bow before Judaism.”
