monk111: (Cats)
Great, after experiencing a few nights of false fire, now that I take a chance and let the cats out, the rain comes down like a hammer. And Coco is apparently caught out somewhere. And I was hoping to catch up on my sleep. Why can't I be allowed to sleep?

Coco makes it in.

"You're even pretty dry. How do you do that?"

Marilyn appreciated the value of youth in life. But I suppose everyone does as they approach middle age.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Norman Rosten, the poet, remembered a call from her in the afternoon. He recalled that the talk was “rambling, but pleasant. She was very much concerned about her future and looking forward to spending part of the autumn in New York. She urged me to come over and use her pool.”

Her words that would always remain with him were, “Let’s all start to live before we get old.”

Dropping the thick Sunday newspaper on Pop's desk, I see the number of newspapers stacking up. He has better things to do these days. In the ten years after Mother died, at least after he retired from his job, reading the day's newspaper was the heart of his day. Obviously, it is good for him that he has been able to enjoy the last of his life more, but surely it can be done without wrecking my life. Yet, even without this change in his social circumstances, we would be racing toward the end, to the beginning of his decrepitude. I always knew that this lifestyle of mine, depending on him as heavily as it does, could not last forever. At least Pop is having a little more fun along the way. Who can say that he does not deserve a little happiness?

But what will become of me?

A little fun at the Constitutional convention between Hamilton and Gouverneur Morris.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

There is a splendid, if unsubstantiated, story about Hamilton and Morris at the convention that rings true and conveys Morris’s ironic, self-assured style. Hamilton and Morris were discussing how Washington signaled to people that they should maintain a respectful distance and not behave too familiarly with him. Hamilton wagered Morris that he would not dare to accost Washington with a friendly slap on the back. Taking up the challenge, Morris found Washington standing by the fireplace in the drawing room and genially cuffed him on the shoulder: “My dear general, how happy I am to see you look so well.” Washington fixed Morris with such a frigid gaze that Morris was sorry that he had ever taken up Hamilton’s dare.

If nothing else, Lindsay Lohan has attitude. So much that she simply won’t accept punishment from the likes of Los Angeles and Santa Monica City prosecutors who've offered her a sweetheart deal of 90-day house arrest in lieu of jail time. She won't accept 60 days of mandatory rehab, either (she declined that gift a little while ago).... Despite nudges from her lawyer Mark Heller, Lindsay won’t cop to anything, and appears to be willing to let the case hit the courtroom. Have fun with that, Linds.

Wow, I can only imagine she is banking on our culture's over-the-top love of celebrities, and that a jury of her admiring fans will let her off the hook completely. It's an interesting gamble. Though, she may also be figuring that, even if she does lose and is found guilty, she will only have to do Paris Hilton time, which is about an hour or two in jail, essentially just long enough for the system to process her papers. It's still an intersting gamble. I know that I wouldn't mind spending 90 days in a mansion, but I guess everything is relative.
