Thomas Jefferson

We have a couple of telling quotes from the young Thomas Jefferson. He was a very active high-achiever, studying fifteen hours a day. He said, “It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.”

However, we can also see how much of an introspective loner he was, more in love with books than with society. He said, “The most effectual means of being secure against pain is to retire within ourselves and to suffice for our own happiness.”

83. Jack and Ronny

Pop managed to get Jack to come over and edge the lawn, after all. But I take it that this is a one-time thing. Ronny helped a little. He seems like such a great kid, as handsome as a movie star, as gentle as a lamb, and as bright as you could wish, but he is a very skinny and very unmuscular thing. Maybe he really is Jack's son, but he also seems to have more height in him and is growing taller yet, a little more anglo than Jack’s genes can contribute to, or maybe I am just more bitter than I really want to be.
