Red recalls Presley’s telling him on a dozen occasions that his mother remembered three-year-old Elvis slipping off her lap at a church service and running down to the choir. There his little voice would try to follow the singing. It gave him his first contact with music and that stayed with him. “People are always talking about where he got his natural ability from,” says Red. That little sonofabitch was singing his ass off back in that church in Tupelo. And when he was about nine he would sing trios with his mother and father.

Red also says that Vernon is a very good singer, and that Elvis got a lot of his talent from the old man, as well as a lot of his good looks. It must have been a good relationship between father and son, because after he achieved success and fame, Elvis apparently continued to keep him close and comfortable.
