The big explosion has happened in the airport, and Nina is on the run, and both the bad guys and the cops are after her. In this excerpt she discovers that the bad guys have the lead when she tries to make a dash back to her apartment.

I’ve got a sixth sense tells me when a guy is watching, and it said an eye in the peephole watched every move I made. Some bastard was in my apartment, waiting for me to open the door. I backed away, spun toward the stairs, tried to keep fear from popping the thoughts out my head. One of the guys from the airport was coming up the front walk, Frick it was, which meant Frack was behind the door watching me. Frick raised his hands like he meant me no harm, smiled, hoped this would make me trust him. But there was a menace behind the smile I’d seen before in men who wanted to hurt me, and there was something about his pasty skin, lank hair, and skinny mustache that made me think he was a spadeful of earth away from the living dead.

Sammy

Sammy was playing harder to get this morning when I tried to bring him inside. I got bolder and just grabbed him by the tail. He quickly flung his head back as if to bite my hand, but he held back. This is the hand that feeds him and pets him lovingly. Bite that and he will learn how tough it is to make a living on the streets on your own.

I love Sammy, and I am willing to go through some trouble to save him from a hundred-degree day, but it is not worth sacrificing my health. Considering his kill-rate, his mouth must be a festering den of infection, and one bite from him will probably send you to the hospital. I think I need to be more mindful of this in the future. I know better than to count on my luck. I am about as short on luck as I am on money; maybe they are related.
