The trial does not end well for K., and here we have the dramatic closing scene.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Were there still objections he’d forgotten? Of course there were. Logic may be unshakeable, but it cannot hold out against a human being who wants to live. Where was the judge he had never seen? Where was the high court he had never reached? He raised his hands and splayed his fingers.
But the hands of one of the men were placed on K.’s throat, whilst the other plunged the knife into his heart and turned it round twice. As his sight faded, K. saw the the two men leaning cheek to cheek close to his face as they observed the final verdict. “Like a dog!” he said. It seemed as if his shame would live on after him.
-- “The Trial” by Franz Kafka

And so we go through life, never even knowing if there is a god, and if there is one, what the rules or laws are. Things happen to us, often terrible things, but we do not know why.

Pruning the Trees
Oct. 8th, 2013 05:36 pmI am only one for three on the cats this time. I got Sammy easily enough, but Coco and Ash just will not come inside, as if this were a house of horrors for them. They won’t let me grab them either, because I am obviously a meany and love to torture cats and make stew with their meat.
Since the city is doing brush pick-up next week, Pop got someone to prune our trees. We need it badly. In fact, this is being done, in significant part, in response to my own urgings. But I didn’t get a chance to get the cats inside. The tree guy is attacking the job on the same day that we talked with them. I cannot blame Pop, really, but if it were me, I would have insisted that they wait until tomorrow.
Well, they are not going to work on the trees throughout the night, and the chances are fair that the cats will come back, and come inside to eat, unless they are made too wary by all the noise and fuss.

I worry too much. The tree guy and his son knocked it out in a couple of hours.
I'm glad Pop took the need to heart. It's a big job done.
