With the temperature below 70 inside the house, I broke and got my sweat-jacket. Now that I am wearing it, I wonder why I had to be ‘broken’. I forgot that I usually like having the least excuse to put on a jacket. I like the extra layering, along with the extra pockets. The only reason why I do not wear a jacket all the time is because it is almost always too damn hot.

Norman Mailer
Oct. 20th, 2013 09:50 am“My experience with all three novels now has been one of starting with characters, finding things for them to do, and then … I discover what my damn theme is.”
-- Norman Mailer
A new biography and a new edition of his essays is coming out. I never have gotten into reading him, even though he fascinated me and seemed like a writer I might enjoy reading. I may have to try those essays.

Mailer had a temper and was fast to throw a punch or quip a snide remark, often at the expense of his reputation. He is famous for stabbing his second wife, Adele Morales; addressing the feminists in his audience at the University of California, Berkeley, as “obedient little bitches” before going on to suggest that “a little bit of rape is good for a man’s soul”; and assaulting Gore Vidal at a party. As Mailer once wrote about himself: “To be the center of any situation was, he sometimes thought, the real marrow of his bone—better to expire as a devil in the fire than an angel in the wings.”

Christianity
Oct. 20th, 2013 04:38 pm“Christianity is not about good people getting better. It is about real people coping with their failure to be good.”
-- David Zahl
Too often Christianity seems to be about people who think they are good telling us that we are shit, which seems all the more ridiculous when they murder an abortion doctor, condemn gays, insist on early-earth creationism over evolution, and just generally seem small-minded, bigoted, and retrograde - more cultic than enlightening.

Dowding Obama
Oct. 20th, 2013 05:36 pmMaureen Dowd, in the aftermath of the government shutdown and default crisis, takes another shot at Obama's aloof style of politics. She relates this homely anecdote for illustration, "When he first saw the White House movie theater, he was surprised there were so many seats beyond what the first family would need. Bill Clinton, on the other hand, probably would have built a balcony and auctioned off seats, if he could have." To be a good leader in a democratic government, you probably do have to be a 'people' person and like to be part of the loud, smelly, maddening crowd. As Clinton could attest, it also doesn't hurt your sex life.
