Winter

No walk again. This time it is the wind rather than the rain - the wind and cold temperatures in the lowest fifties. I used to bundle up and force such walks, last year, but not now; I thought it was exercise back then and needed to be maintained consistently, but not any longer. Cleared of these fond delusions, I understand it is just a little walk, and it is not worth suffering for.

It was cold enough this morning that all three cats have come inside and are even now cuddled together on Pop’s recliner. It was cold enough last night that I broke out Big Blue from the closet - the heavy-duty winter blanket that Mother gave me. I used to say she made it for me, but I no longer feel sure if she did, as it does not look like a knitted thing, but it is still my best blanket in either case, putting in more than a decade of good service.

Bateman and Price arrive at Evelyn’s place for the dinner party. Evelyn is Bateman’s girlfriend. Courtney is there as well, who is of their feather and their class. There is another couple there whose heights don’t reach so high, who are of the Bohemian artist type, Vanden and Stash. This excerpt is not particularly sparkling, but I like how it catches the eliteness of our main cast, including our psycho friend. Vanden asks Evelyn where she went to school, and Courtney chimes in.

“Where did you go?” Vanden sighs after it finally becomes clear to her that no one is interested in Camden.

“Well, I went to Le Rosay,” Evelyn starts, “and then to business school in Switzerland.”

“I also survived business school in Switzerland,” Courtney says. “But I was in Geneva. Evelyn was in Lausanne.”

It surprised me that even the girlfriends had such powerful educations, and I suppose this is why Bateman does not look to them when he is hunting for victims, at least not usually. What is a rule without exceptions?

Last Days

“I see you are turning to your bedtime reading earlier.”

Yes, well, this detective/amputation cult story, “Last Days”, is engrossing, but my daily reading, the Pentateuch is also quite un-engrossing. Besides, I am also anxious to get started on my next bedtime book, “By Reason of Insanity”, which came in the mail today.

“You seem to be enjoying yourself.”

Yes. It’s not a picnic with a lover, whose blonde hair is wafting in the breeze, but, yeah, I’m not really feeling much pain. It is good times for me, or at least this is as good as it gets.

Lesley

Pop asks, “Do you remember that old guy that used to come to the house?”

It actually only takes me a moment to think about it. It’s the guy who I first used to call Ghost Biker. Lesley is the real name, I think. We do not have a lot of old guys coming to the house. A couple of old women, sure, but not any old guys. I say, “Yeah.”

Pop says, “He’s in a nursing home now.”

I nod, “I’m not surprised. He was pretty old.” I should have held back, because he is not much older than Pop.

“A headache?”

No. Maybe a little one. It is getting a little late, and I have to finish the grocery list, and I think I should take a shower. Since my hair is short again, a shower does not really feel like a necessity, but I do feel a little greasy. I was going to take care of it with this morning’s walk.

“Ah, but there was no walk this morning!”

You see my problem.

“Bah, I don’t see much of a problem.”

True, but, remember, I stress easy.

“What’s the matter? Is there a bug in your water?”

No, there’s no water in my water. Or rather there is no water in my cup, but there is still ice. I forgot. This is one of the benefits of winter and the cold weather: my ice melts slower and I do not burn through as much ice in the day.
