Another wintry spell is upon us, our second chilly pass I suppose, with overnight temperatures expected to drop back into the thirties, and I have the cats inside. Kind of cozy and comfortable.

Mr. Pessoa gives us an interesting twist on the old affecting idea that the loss of God and Christianity was a tragedy for Western civilization.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

When Christianity passed over souls like a storm that rages all night until morning, the havoc it had invisibly wreaked could be felt, but only after it has passed did the actual damage become clear. Some thought that the damage resulted from Christianity’s departure, but this was just what revealed the damage, not what caused it.

-- Fernando Pessoa, “The Book of Disquiet”

Is Pessoa a Nietzschean? Since he was such an introverted, sensitive man, I would have thought that he would have favored the softening touches of Christianity with its privileging of the weak and the poor. Perhaps he is focused on the way that Christianity promoted an ignorance over our understanding of the way the world works, both technologically and metaphysically. Regardless, it is a good twist in an old discussion.
