It was a moderate night with temperatures barely dipping in the forties. At about one or two in the morning, in the dreamy haze of sleep, I heard a sound that was like someone rolling a big wooden barrel down the sidewalk. It kept going on, and I woke up enough to realize that something more serious must be going on. I remembered that windstorms were in the forecast. And that is what the commotion was about. I get up, and I see that Coco and Ash are happy to rush inside the house. I also see Sammy lying on the lawn near the back fence, but he is not disturbed by the wind. He prefers to remain outdoors. That’s fine by me; it’s not that cold, just a little spooky.

When I got up for a bathroom run at around four or five, Sammy was then eager to come in as well. I liked that even better. Then when I got up for the day at a little after seven, I thought the wind was putting enough bite into the January air that I might not have gone on my walk, if I was, say, in the middle of rereading Macbeth. However, as I am still in the middle of Steppenwolf, I fortified my nerve and went out.
