monk111: (Flight)
Here is an account of Francis's difficult and controversial tenure as provincial superior during Argentina's dark political era in the 1970s. We also see that his particular sensitivity to the issues of the poorest people was well evident early on, and is not just an air he decided to put on when he became pope.

Groceries

monk111: (Effulgent Days)
Been busy for a bit and pushed for time. Last night, well into the evening, Pop suggests that we get the groceries tomorrow morning instead of waiting until Friday. Another winter storm, like the one that hit us on our last grocery day, is hanging over our heads. At least I already had almost half of the grocery list finished. But it was still going to be a late evening, and of course a very busy morning and noon today. It was thirty degrees on our way out, but at least there was no hint of rain, and no ice on the windshield. And now the chore is out of the way, and we have three weeks before the next grocery day. It is not as bad as cleaning the toilet or mowing the lawn, and it is nice to have some control over the food in the house, and I can even get a bag of food for the ducks, but it still takes hours away from my books and the Internet.

Camus

Back to the days of the French Resistance. There is danger in the air, but there is also carousing and romance and general fun. This excerpt is a quotation from a colleague of Camus’s, who was merrily drunk and jumped on top of the bar to make this statement.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

“I’m going to speak to you about an injustice worse than the one we denounce in column after column of our daily for the intellectual elite; this injustice is alive and is right here in front of us - it’s Camus; he has everything it takes to seduce, to be happy, to be famous, and in addition he has the insolence to be not only talented but a genius. Against this injustice there’s not a damn thing we can do.”

-- quoted in “Camus and Sartre” by Ronald Aronson

Jesus, Pop bought a hat rack. Does this mean that he intends on getting some more cowboy hats. This rack looks like it can hold three. That is probably close to a thousand dollars to play cowboy. It would be nice if he could at least double my allowance.
