“Do you remember,” he went on, “writing in your diary, ‘Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four’?”
“Yes,” said Winston.
O’Brien held up his left hand, its back toward Winston, with the thumb hidden and the four fingers extended.
“How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?”
“Four.”
“And if the Party says that it is not four but five - then how many?”

The tensions over Ukraine have been on a steady simmer, but the situation is still hot. Checking on Pop
Mar. 30th, 2014 10:04 pmI ventured to ask Pop if I should check on him in the middle of the night sometimes. Not wanting the responsibility, I was kind of hoping he would say ‘forget about it’, but fortunately he seems to appreciate his vulnerability, and I am just going to have to step up. He says I should check on him, and that he hasn’t locked his door in a long time in case he needs to call for me. I am just hoping that it is easy to tell when he is in a trance and is not just sleeping. Judging by my experience of that night, I am thinking that his eyes will be open, but I am not sure if Pop was merely able to open his eyes when Kay tried to engage him. He agreed that I shouldn’t wake him up. My plan is to check on him at around three in the morning, when I have a bathroom run, and when I wake up in the morning at around seven. He usually doesn’t go to bed until after midnight.

I just double-checked to see if he definitely does not want me to wake him up, or if I just led him to that answer, and it turns out that he actually wants me to wake him up. He really is scared. He probably should be. I should be, too.
