monk111: (Bonobo Thinking)
We do have a few buds of elephant ears left. I gave some thought to ripping them out of the ground and leaving this part of my life behind me for good, but I gave in and started watering them today. I cannot guess very well how they will look when they have grown. They do not seem to be ideally spaced, and I am thinking that I might have to try to transplant a bud to another spot to give the patch a little aesthetic respectability. Regardless, I do not now if it is worth the watering, even aside from the effort it requires of me. Water gets more scarce in this region all the time and more expensive.
monk111: (Default)
“I have ever hated all nations, professions, and communities, and all my love is toward individuals: for instance, I hate the tribe of lawyers, but I love Counsellor Such-a-one, and Judge Such-a-one: so with physicians—I will not speak of my own trade—soldiers, English, Scotch, French, and the rest. But principally I hate and detest that animal called man, although I heartily love John, Peter, Thomas, and so forth. This is the system upon which I have governed myself for many years.”

-- Jonathan Swift

Swift wrote this in a letter to Alexander Pope dated September 29, 1725.
