Wow, I see LJ is undergoing another self-improvement mood, changing the site again. Man, they really bring the SUCK. Can there be a less talented team anywhere else on the Internet?

The So-Called American Dream
May. 15th, 2014 03:41 pm“Equality of opportunity — the ‘American dream’ — has always been a cherished American ideal,” Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel-winning economist at Columbia University, noted in a recent speech. “But data now show that this is a myth: America has become the advanced country not only with the highest level of inequality, but one of those with the least equality of opportunity.”

Mr. Kristof bids us to speak of the Canadian dream rather than the American dream, though he notes that western Europe is better off, too. In order to ground the point in more deeply, we are give a few provocative data points.

* The six Walmart heirs are worth as much as the bottom 41 percent of American households put together.
