Reading Schmidt's "Novel: A Biography", I find myself wishing harder that I could have learned French somehow. To truly know literature I suppose French is perhaps essential. Though, I was unable to learn even Spanish. Yet, if I would have worked harder on Spanish, that might have put French within my reach, with the two being somewhat kin to each other. For my laziness in my youth, I pay a heavy price in my middle-age, not to mention having to live poor.
"Maybe you were just genuinely low-energy."
Possibly. But it is the same outcome, and I just as soon take responsibility for it. It is easier.
