I am watering today. It is only my second time this summer, and I’m hoping it’s my last time, that we will get some rain sometime in the middle of August. If Pop can afford country music CDs, I suppose we can afford one more watering, and we are up against it. We are in the fiery heart of the south Texas summer. I am trying to minimize the damage, to keep the trees up and breathing, and to keep the grounds and house from crumbling, not to mention salvaging what little green lawn we have left.

One of the great obstacles for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks is that the Palestinians can see that the playing field is tilted in favor of the Israelis by their American mediators, and there is not a lot of good-faith left.

I was planning on finishing my Lincoln book, but I think I will switch over back to Schmidt's book on the biography of the English novel.
