Lo (1,11) That Prelapsarian Summer
Sep. 7th, 2014 04:51 amCharlotte, Mommy Haze, has shanghaied Humbert for a trip to the store. She says she wants to buy some perfume for a friend, and he cannot easily refuse since one of his gigs is supposed to be with the perfume business. “Choose your favorite seduction,” she purred. Before she can drive off, Lo barges into the car with them and, despite her mother’s obvious wishes, she goes along.

My knuckles lay against the child’s blue jeans. She was barefooted; her toenails showed remnants of cherry-red polish and there was a bit of adhesive tape across her big toe; and, God, what would I not have given to kiss them then and there those delicate-boned, long-toed, monkeyish feet! Suddenly her hand slipped into mine, and without our chaperone’s seeing, I held, and stroked, and squeezed that little hot paw, all the way to the store.

Despite all the focus on Lo and Hum, we are reminded that this is a love-triangle. Charlotte never does give that perfume to her friend; “the lady decided to keep Humbert’s Choice for the backs of her own shapely ears.”
