When his crying mother says to him, “I worry that you’ll be lonely,” he swivels his eyeballs in her direction and says, “I was going to be lonely anyway.”

-- Book review of "Wolf in White Van" by John Darnielle, based on the life of the teen who botched his suicide attempt and shot his face to hell

“A poem has secrets that the poet knows nothing of.”

-- Stanley Kunitz

Kunitz, it should be remembered, gave us one of my most favorite poems of all time: "Hornworm: Autumn Lamentation"

Oh, shit, Pop has parked off to the side of the driveway. I guess Kay is coming, even though it is not even 'grocery weekend'.

How about a fucking break!

* * *

It occurs to me why Pop prefers to do some heavy-duty cooking rather than take Kay out to eat. It is not to save money, since he spends as much on the steaks and pork chops and all the fixings, not to mention all the work that he puts into these meals. The answer is probably that he really does hate to drive at night, and five o'clock dinners are too early.
