Writing Life
Oct. 9th, 2014 06:05 pmI see now that I made a mistake about incorporating my book-blogging into my hardcover journals. I think I was seduced by the idea of having at hand a practically inexhaustible amount of material with which to fill up my little books, and I now appreciate that this should not be a consideration at all. It is not too costly a lesson, as I have only done so much of that material.
This is not to say that I will not include quotations from my favorite novels, but they must transcend the plot and the little universe that the story creates. I should be almost as selective as I am when it comes to quoting from the movies I watch
As for the longer journal entries and poems, I think they’re fine. The poems should really hit home for me, though. For instance, Eliot’s "La Figlia che Piange", or the one about talking of Michelangelo, read wonderfully, and I enjoy them, but I cannot meaningfully relate to them. I also need to maintain some discipline over the journal entries. Since this material is directly personal and very meaningful, I have more freedom in bringing the entries into my little books, but I should work to hone them down to their most serviceable parts. I do not need to follow the old ‘80 words’ rule, but I should perhaps try to keep to it, giving way only when I feel deeply compelled to.
