Tom Parker was quick to win Elvis’s confidence.

When Presley told the Colonel how he and the Blue Moon Boys had got the thumbs-down treatment from the Arthur Godfrey Show audition team, the Colonel looked him in the eye and, in a voice that instilled instant confidence in the young man, said, “Boy, we’ll have New York for you for money you can’t believe.” If anyone around Presley thought it was an idle boast, they were very soon to change their minds.

The Dish guy came to hook everything up to the new TV. I must confess that I am awed. Maybe it is worth our souls. First, the picture truly was a new level of clarity. One always hears about how this and that new TV will bring a whole new level of snap, crackle, pop to your TV viewing pleasure, but it has always seemed more hype than TV-wow. That is not true this time. Just going by the picture, it looks like a genuinely next-generation level of technology, as though we jumped into the next age of television sets.

But that is not the part that slayed my heart and made me a believer. We did not have to add anything to catch the Internet on TV, except our Wi-Fi password. You cannot see everything that you can see on the Internet on the TV, but you have a good catalog of all the popular sites, including Amazon and YouTube. Pop is set on getting Netflix as well. I was blown away watching YouTube videos on this TV, watching Miley strut her stuff. Even the audio is pretty good, which surprises me for what is essentially a flat-screen TV. How do they work in the speakers? Though, I imagine that if you want to max out the potential of your entertainment set-up, you probably need to get your own speakers. I imagine we will go without that; Pop is not an audiophile, and good speakers are not cheap.

I just set up our Amazon account on this thing and am watching Scarlett Johansson's "Under the Skin", and I am thinking this is what TV was always meant to be. Merry Christmas to us! Now if only Pop can have another good ten years in him.
