When she began to snip away at my hair and I watched it cascade down my protective smock, I was dumbfounded to see more gray than black hair. When I got home, I took a closer look and saw that my hair does seem to be at about that halfway point, about as much gray as black. I didn't know it was that bad. Well, maybe it will stop growing so fast. I would like my haircut to do a better job of lasting me a whole year. I do love it short and trouble-free. And one dab of shampoo will do you, with no need to repeat.
Interestingly, I imagine telling my old Yokota High School friends, perhaps in a letter, about this wild turn of events, "Hey, guys, get this: my hair has turned gray!" as though time as frozen for them and they are forever fifteen and it was just a few months ago that we were together shooting hoops and eating Yokota burgers, waiting for a wonderful future to happen. And to think that I still have yet to get my first girlfriend. Boy, I bet that will be fun!

The Gospel of John
Apr. 15th, 2015 07:49 pmBefore anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God. He created everything there is — nothing exists that he didn’t make. Eternal life is in him, and this life gives light to all mankind. His life is the light that shines through the darkness — and the darkness can never extinguish it.
-- John 1:1-5 (Living Bible translation)
In David Brook's column about Abraham Lincoln, he noted that Abe read for depth rather than breadth, and that among his perennial books was the King James Bible. That sort of put me in the mood to take up the Bible again in my own reading life. I am going with the New Testament. I am going with only one of the gospels, the gospel of John, and will proceed from there. I am not being born yet again, and this will not become a prayer journal or anything. I will simply get down some of the verses that most impress me as moving poetry.
In most translations of these verses, it is written that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, instead of saying Christ. I prefer that wording, but I liked the overall translation here.
