Sartre

This Sartre quotation reminds us that communism was of some force back in the day, especially in the first years after the second world war.

“An anti-Communist is a dog. I couldn’t see a way out of that one, and I never will. … after ten years of ruminating, I had come to the breaking point, and only needed that one last straw. In the language of the Church, this was my conversion.”

-- Jean-Paul Sartre

I could not make out what exactly constituted this last straw. An important part of the discussion has to do with positioning himself in contradistinction to Camus.

Dr. G.

What a coincidence! On the day that the newspaper is delivered in a disorganized fashion, it also happens to be the day that Dr. G. has written an essay on the evolution of our city government, and it is his essay, complete with his smiley picture, that is on top of this bunch of botched up newspaper sections.

On second and clearer thought, maybe this is deliberate but not personal. This was not meant solely for me; rather, the paper wanted everyone in the city to get a better chance at catching this essay, since we apparently have a key election on the possible reform of the city government. Yup, this is where I would bet my money.

I guess I have not entirely cleared Dr. G. from my psychological complexes. I spent too many years hoping he would save me, and the disappointment of being left to rot, of being left to my failure, is not easily ignored and overcome.

Ex Machina

Maureen Dowd writes about a new movie coming out, "Ex Machina", about a man that falls for a new femme fatale robot.

I ask if the movie will enhance the fear of some women that guys are more into the porn stars on their phones than the girls on their arms.

“The thing we desire and think we can’t have we can now shape exactly to the specification of how we want it,” he says. “There’s something incredibly scary about how unstoppable it feels.”

-- Maureen Dowd at The New York Times

Oh man, I say, when?? And can we please make it affordable? Just the Real Dolls still cost a small fortune.
