Robert Frost

“It all started in Derry … the whole thing.”

-- Robert Frost

Recall that Frost was not born into New England rural life, but moved into it. Apparently, the farming life was first suggested by a doctor for health reasons, and he then showed that he was able to be reasonably successful as a poultry farmer, until personal family complications led to a break with the owner of that farm. The Frosts then bought Derry Farm, and the rest is literary history, as it was here that the poet found his muse and inspiration.

Frost did not do badly [as a farmer], given that the soil was poor, the winter’s harsh, and the economy stagnant. His modest enterprise was subsistence farming, with eggs and apples supplying enough cash to meet the needs of the family. “I was a poor farmer in those days,” Frost later said, “but rich, too. There was plenty of food, and time, too. Lots of time. I was time-rich.”

-- Jay Parini, “Robert Frost: A Life”
