"Yes - what the American public always wants is a tragedy with a happy ending."

-- W. D. Howells (1837 - 1920)

Mr. Howells was speaking of the failure of the play-dramatization of Edith Wharton's "House of Mirth". Ms. Wharton insisted that her heroine not survive in the play, though she knew that this would doom the play's success. I actually got the anecdote from the preface of Michael Tolkin's "The Return of the Player", a sequel to "The Player" which was a smash success starring Tim Robbins. I had just come upon Tolkin's collection of screenplays containing "The Player", "The Rapture" that starred Mimi Rogers, and "The New Age" starring Peter Weller and Judy Davis. I am still trapped in my screenplay mania, and I loved these three movies and could not pass this collection by, fearing that it might suddenly go out of print and become unavailable.
