Here is an interesting prefatory note to Saul Bellow's interview with The Paris Review.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Certain types of questions were ruled out in early discussions. Mr. Bellow was not interested in responding to criticisms of his work that he found trivial or stupid. He quoted the Jewish proverb that a fool can throw a stone into the water that ten wise men cannot recover. Nor did he wish to discuss what he considered his personal writing habits, whether he used a pen or typewriter, how hard he pressed on the page. For the artist to give such loving attention to his own shoelaces was dangerous, even immoral.

KFC

I figured out how to get some more Kentucky Fried Chicken into my diet. Pop has agreed that I can use my Pizza Day for it. Although it is a few dollars more expensive, I can get some KFC instead of carry-out pizza. I will probably alternate. I also like getting a real pizza every once in a while. Frozen food is kind of cold substitute for the real thing.

Well, look at that: a sunny day. I guess we knew this had to be coming sometime. Judging by forecast, this time the sun should be sticking around for a long time. It's not that I am really desirous to see our summer sun in full swing, but one does get tired of being flooded in, and of course there is the matter of the cats. They lie by the glass sliding-door in the kitchen and look longingly at me when I pass by, not understanding that we still need the little ponds that remain in our back yard to dry out.

It's only Tuesday and Kay is here already?? It's three whole nights before grocery day even gets here. Shit. That's not very nice. Wednesday would be bad enough, but Tuesday?! Well, I guess love much be accommodated. It has been all on Pop to hold us up in the world, enabling us to enjoy a little of the American good life, and so I guess he certainly deserves to enjoy some fond female companionship if he can get it. It doubtlessly helps to keep him going in his mid-seventies. The annoyance of having to work around a guest pales in comparison to the fear of my little life blowing up without Pop, and a reasonably healthy Pop at that.
