I should make note of a major geopolitical news event today. I don't think the media has put out anything very quotable yet. Nobody can be sure just how big this is.
A Russian military leader stepped into America's Iraqi embassy to announce that Russia is going to begin conducting airstrikes over Syria, and warning that all American aircraft should leave the airways. The Americans have waved off the warnings, but both countries are now bombing Syrian targets.
In another dark twist, the Russians said they would be attacking ISIS terrorists. Instead, they have been hitting opposition groups to the Syrian leader Assad. A critical point of contention is that Obama wants Assad out while Putin wants to keep his old ally in. So, in one country, you have the military forces of America and Russia going at it with contrary purposes.
This would seem to be even more sensitive than the crisis in Ukraine. This would seem to be as close to war as you can possible be without it actually being war. The Americans and Russians just aren't quite firing directly at each other, but it is obviously very cozy and a little too warm. It feels like you can go to bed at night but not be sure about what world you will wake up to.
