Vernon Scott, a longtime Hollywood reporter for United Press International, understood the attraction of Marilyn to the Kennedys. “She was gorgeous and she was funny. She had more sex appeal than any woman I ever saw, and I’ve seen lots of them. She was probably every man’s dream of the kind of woman he’d like to spend the rest of his life with on a desert island. She was much smarter than people gave her credit for. She never did or said anything by accident.”

Johnny Depp is doing a star-turn playing Tonto in a remake of "The Lone Ranger", and he apparently almost got seriously hurt on a horse ride, as he recounts on Dave Letterman's show.

"Where are the stunt people, for heaven's sake?" marveled Letterman. "You're Tonto, you don't need that!"

"That's the exact same question I asked," replied Depp.

It's a life, I guess.

The Oscars

It's Oscar time. This Sunday is the night, I guess. As with the Superbowl, I stopped watching sometime ago. In today's media buzz, we have actors Ethan Hawke and Juaquin Phoneix pissing on the ceremonies.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

"People want to turn everything in this country into a competition," Hawke said. "It's so asinine ... if you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it's really destructive."

Hawke's comments, including the remark about "fake carrots," are very similar to those made by Joaquin Phoenix last year.

"I think it's bulls--t," Phoenix said about the Oscars during an interview with Elvis Mitchell for Interview magazine. "I think it's total, utter bulls--t, and I don't want to be a part of it. I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective. Pitting people against each other ... It's the stupidest thing in the whole world." Phoenix is nominated at the Oscars 2013 ceremony for his role in "The Master."

Maybe I should forget about that Hormel roast beef. It always leaves a very bad aftertaste and weighs queasily in my stomach, as though I just ate an artifical monstrosity posing as roast beef. And stick to hamburger meat and the biweekly steak.
