A little informal celebration after signing the Constitution.

After signing, the delegates adjourned to the City Tavern, which John Adams described as the “most genteel tavern in America,” for a farewell dinner. Behind the conviviality lurked unspoken fears, and Washington, for one, doubted that the new federal government would survived twenty years.

monk111: (Effulgent Days)
Pop dropped the news at dinnertime that he received his tax refund, and he wants to shop for my clothes tomorrow. Which is about one of the worst days for this. It’s grocery week, and I was set to take a walk to the duck pond tomorrow. Nevertheless, we didn’t get anything for me last year, and I cannot let this opportunity pass me by this year. I am sure there are other things he would like to do with the money. Indeed, I am rather surprised he said anything, that it even came to his mind.
