When the Great Depression struck, many influential people argued that the government shouldn’t even try to limit the damage. According to Herbert Hoover, Andrew Mellon, his Treasury secretary, urged him to “Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate the farmers. ... It will purge the rottenness out of the system.” Don’t try to hasten recovery, warned the famous economist Joseph Schumpeter, because “artificial stimulus leaves part of the work of depressions undone.”

Such a cool, overcast morning.  A little too much so.  I am geared up to knock out that mowing once and for all.  But the air is actually misty and the ground is also a tad wet.  If it would just stop misting, that would be fine, for the ground is not that wet.  The problem is that the weather doesn't want to clear in the least.  I am still looking to get it done this morning, but I really don't want to be starting after ten-thirty and then find myself starving to death while hurrying the job.

A new movie adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet".

It looks to me like this one will far surpass the last movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. What magic of dreaming that Shakespeare possessed!

"I think the language that men understand and they receive — is through food and through sex."

-- Gabrielle Reece

Ms. Reece was a volleyball star. This quote comes from an article in which she discusses how she overcame the severe difficulties of her marriage by understanding that, as a woman, she needs to be the submissive. Pretty hot.

The Grill

"I'm going to fire up the grill!" Pop says.

The man still has that energy. Well, good! It's a lot better than him being decrepit.

But I cannot help feeling the inconvenience of it. I'm going to get raw chicken that I am going to have to bake in the oven after he takes it off the grill. And it is late. After six already, and he is just beginning. I'm a little hungry now.

My best play? To go with it and spend more time in the big room with my books and the laptop.

Meanwhile, I wonder how many flies, mosquitoes, and other assorted pests will be making it into the house, with all that going-in and going-out. We'll just have to count ourselves lucky if we don't get any bees or wasps.
