Reese Witherspoon
Apr. 22nd, 2013 06:42 amReese Witherspoon has already come out with her statement of contrition.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Reese Witherspoon has spoken out in the wake of her surprising Friday night arrest and brief jailing for disorderly conduct, releasing a contrite statement of apology for her uncharacteristic, headline-grabbing behavior.
"Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now," she said. "But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said.
"It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse."
The 37-year-old and her agent hubby Jim Toth were both arrested early Friday, Toth for an alleged DUI and Witherspoon for allegedly disobeying instruction from a police officer to remain in her vehicle during the traffic stop.
"I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job," she continued. "I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."
A court hearing on the matter has been set for Monday at 8 a.m. in Atlanta Municipal Court, though neither the actress—who proved herself a consummate pro by attending tonight's New York premiere of her new film Mud despite her newsmaking—nor her husband are expected to be present.

David Foster Wallace
Apr. 22nd, 2013 12:45 pmA nice snippet of an interview with David Foster Wallace from 1996. I particularly like the part when he speaks about learning that the writer needs to avoid the trap of trying to prove to his readers how so very clever he is, because I don't think Wallace ever truly mastered that lesson, which is why his writing is fairly unapproachable, or at least hard to get through.

News of Reese Witherspoon getting arrested was shocking, but what may have surprised fans even more was what the sweet, Southern mom of three reportedly said to police officers.
According to the police report, "Mrs. Witherspoon asked, 'Do you know my name?' I answered, 'No, I don't need to know your name.' I then added, 'Right now.' Mrs. Witherspoon stated, 'You're about to find out who I am'."

Hardly shocking news, even though Reese does strike the naive fan as being more genteel than that.

The Promise of Viritual Reality

With the goggles on my head, I was in a digital representation of a medieval village in the midst of a light snowfall. There were no rapid-fire guns or enemies to fight, just a highly detailed world to “walk” through. [Joseph Chen, the company's senior product manager] encouraged me to look around and look up to see the snow falling down and the cathedral steeple rising up into the night sky. ”Rotate your head and look behind you,” he said. I look in the direction of Chen’s voice and find nothing but a lonely street. A walk into the cloistered entryway of the cathedral felt claustrophobic, but a few steps more and the cathedral opened up to a sprawling interior with arched ceilings.
After a few minutes of this, Chen asked me to stand up, and I was struck by how difficult this task suddenly seemed. “Don’t worry,” he said, “I’ll put my hand on your shoulder to make sure you don’t bump into anything.” He had me turn around and I could feel myself being guided through two different worlds at the same time: The real world, where Chen was making sure I didn’t bump my shins into my chair, and the virtual world, where I was looking through the falling snow at a bridge in the distance.

Hating on America
Apr. 22nd, 2013 05:32 pmAfter the Boston Marathon bombing, as with all attacks on America, you can count on getting some crowing from the international crowds. I'll pick my favorite quote.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
"Why should I be dropping a tear for a nation that constitutes an error of Evolution? A blood-thirsty mob that every day kills innocent children around the world?! Who are they to be defining the fate of millions of peeps around the world!? An ugly, hateful Jewish state that drains the brains from all the world! And because humans are greedy creatures, the materialistic America currently finds itself at the top!"

Guys, everyone knows that the Constitution is optional, and does not apply if any Senator says 'terrorist' three times in a row.
